How a barrel pick actually works

Here's the whole process, start to finish, with a link on every number. Where a distillery hasn't published something, we say so rather than filling the gap with a guess.

What you're actually buying

You buy one barrel, or in a few programs a fraction of one. The distillery bottles what's in it, you put your own label on it, and that's the whole run. Nothing gets blended in to stretch it, so the bottle count is whatever that barrel holds.

• Jim Beam sells a whole barrel, which yields 100 to 175 bottles.^1,2 official
• Angel's Envy runs about 250 custom-labeled bottles per selection.³ official
• New Riff sells fractions. Its 4-Year Bourbon starts at a minimum 90 bottles, or 15 cases.⁴ official
• Lux Row sets a private selection at 60 bottles.⁵ official

The steps, inquiry to bottles

Four steps, and the first one is the part people get stuck on.

Step one is the inquiry. Some distilleries take a form on their own site. Others only take you through a sales rep or a distributor, which means you need an account or a retailer willing to front the request.

• Bardstown Bourbon Company takes an online interest form asking for your profile type and product preference.⁶ official

Step two is the tasting and the pick. This is either a visit, a video call, or a box of samples in the mail.

• Beam runs a private tour of the Fred B. Noe Distillery plus a rackhouse tasting of several single barrels.^1,2 official
• Four Roses will ship samples to the retailer to taste on their own time, or host the pick in person at Cox's Creek.^9,10 reported
• Ross & Squibb offers in person, virtual with the master distiller, or a sample kit with no guided tasting.¹¹ official

Step three is bottling. The barrel gets dumped, bottled, and labeled after you choose.

Step four is paying the balance and picking the bottles up, usually through the retailer who placed the order.

• Beam takes a $1,000 non-refundable deposit at booking and the full balance at pickup.^1,2 official

Why a retailer shows up even when you pick

Alcohol in the United States moves through three tiers. The producer sells to a distributor, the distributor sells to a licensed retailer, and the retailer sells to you. A distillery can let you taste and choose the barrel, but in most cases it still can't hand you the cases directly.

That's why a liquor store's name ends up on an order you did all the work for. The store is the retailer of record.

• Buffalo Trace lets individuals win a selection right, then still needs a licensed retailer to complete the purchase.^12,13 reported
• Barton 1792 works the same way through the same portal.¹² reported
• Heaven Hill skips individuals entirely. It's licensed retailer and bar-restaurant accounts only.^7,8 reported

What it costs

Most distilleries don't publish a price. We're only listing the ones that put a number somewhere we can link to, and we're labeling each one official or reported.

Of the 20 programs tracked here, 4 have published anything at all about cost.

• Jim Beam: a $1,000 deposit credited toward the final cost, with bottles priced from $59.99 each and the total set by the barrel's yield.^1,2 official
• Buffalo Trace: private barrels reported in the $5,000 to $10,000+ range.^13,14 reported
• Remus Bourbon: a minimum suggested retail of $69.99 per 700mL bottle, which is a shelf price and not the barrel cost.¹⁵ reported

Lead time, honestly

Two programs publish a real turnaround. The rest either don't say, or the number floating around covers one stage and not the whole job.

• New Riff bottles within 30 days of selection, the fastest we found.⁴ official
• Beam quotes 90 to 120 days from selection to bottles ready.^1,2 official
• Maker's Mark quotes about 9 weeks for the stave finishing alone, not booking to bottles.^8,16 reported
• One report put the Woodford waitlist at more than a year, and that report is dated.¹⁷ reported
• Michter's Fort Nelson fill is same day, but that's one bottle, not a barrel.^18,19 reported

Group path or retailer path

If you're a bar or a liquor store, you already have the path. If you're a group of friends, a company, or a charity, you're looking for the programs that say so out loud.

• Bardstown Bourbon Company takes licensed accounts, private individuals or groups, and 501(c)(3) charities through the same form.⁶ official
• Green River lists the same three categories, and says only 100 barrels were available in 2025.²⁰ official
• New Riff's fractional option starts at 90 bottles, which is realistic for a small group.⁴ official
• Lux Row is the other end of it. Retail accounts and businesses only, through a Luxco sales rep.⁵ official
• Four Roses picks go mostly to licensed retailers, bars, and restaurants.^9,10 reported

If a distillery is retailer only, the move is to find a store that already runs picks and ask to ride along on one.

The lottery programs

Sazerac runs its picks as a drawing instead of a booking. You don't buy a slot, you enter for one.

• Sazerac Barrel Select is free to join. You earn points and wait for a quarterly drawing.¹² official
• Winners pick between an on-site tasting and tour, or samples shipped to them.^13,12 reported
• Barton 1792 runs through the same portal.¹² official

Winning the draw doesn't finish it. You still need a retailer of record to close the purchase.
